Guidance on all aspects of applying for our funding, including application stages, accessibility, account creation and using AI.

Applying for our funding

We fund in several ways, and this page explains how our responsive grant application process works. For more information on our wider funding offer, please visit our approach to funding.

If you’re thinking about applying for a grant, please read the guidance below before you begin. It outlines what to check first, how to prepare, and where to find programme-specific information when funding rounds are open.

How to apply

Step 1

Before you start your application, please check that your organisation and work align with our funding priorities.

  1. Review our General eligibility and exclusions – these apply across all programmes.
  2. Visit Funding to see which programmes or grants are currently open.
  3. Read the relevant programme page for details on its priorities, aims, specific eligibility criteria, guidelines and FAQs.
  4. Attend or watch a webinar – details and recordings are available from within each programme when funding rounds are open.
  5. Use each programme’s Eligibility Checker.
  6. Book a pre-application call – when rounds are open, applicants will have the opportunity to speak with a member of the funding team for short, constructive guidance before applying.

We actively seek regular feedback from applicants and funded organisations to help us improve our approach. We’ll also provide feedback to groups who are unsuccessful.

Step 2

When a funding round is open, you’ll find all the details for each grant round on the dedicated grant’s page – including eligibility, timelines, and a link to the relevant online application form, where you’ll be able to apply for the grant.

(For example, the first round of Access to Justice funding will open for applications from Friday 14 November 2025.)

Within each programme, we’ll make it clear when applications are open or closed. You can also check our Funding page for current opportunities.

Step 3

To apply, please use the dedicated, online application form for the grant you are interested in. If you’ve applied before, you can log in using your existing details (and start or resume your application).

If you’re new, follow the simple sign-up steps in How to create an account on our Application Portal’ below. You’ll be able to start your application from the email you receive after you’ve created an account.

You’ll also find step-by-step guidance on navigating the portal, saving your work, and submitting your application in our downloadable Instructions for Applicants. (Please note: this guide currently reflects the Access to Justice process but will be updated as new programmes launch.)

Decision-making stages

We make decisions using a two-stage process. The details and timelines may vary between programmes, but the steps below outline what you can expect.

Stage 1 – Application review

Our team reviews your application against the programme’s criteria, assessing how well your organisation and work align with the funding priorities.

  • If shortlisted, our funding team will contact you by email and phone.
  • If your application isn’t successful, you’ll receive an email. You can request written feedback.

Stage 2 – Conversation and assessment

If you are shortlisted, we’ll contact you to discuss further or arrange a visit with our funding team. We’ll explore your organisation’s work, communities, and approach in more depth.

  • Following our meeting, we’ll compile a report to support our decision-making.
  • If your application is approved, we’ll contact you about the next steps and the process for receiving your grant.
  • If you’re not successful, you’ll receive feedback by email. You can request a follow-up call to discuss your application.

Accessibility and help

Our Application Portal works best in Chrome, Edge, or Firefox.

If you experience any accessibility issues or require the form in an alternative format, please contact funding@citybridgefoundation.org.uk or call 020 7332 3710 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm).

We can also provide reasonable adjustments or support with accessibility needs.

Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in your application

We recognise that digital and AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and others) are becoming an integral part of how people work and apply for funding. These tools can help with:

  • Improving clarity, grammar or structure
  • Translating or simplifying language
  • Drafting early ideas – as long as the final version reflects your voice and values

At the same time, we’re aware of the risks and ethical concerns AI can raise – including bias, misinformation, data privacy, exclusion, authenticity and environmental impact. As a funder, we’re committed to exploring these issues with our partners and ensuring AI is used in ways that support inclusion, trust and community voice.

If you use AI in your application, please:

  • Be transparent – tell us what tools you used and why
  • Take responsibility – you’re accountable for the content, accuracy and originality
  • Be authentic – we want to hear your story, in your own words
  • Check everything – AI can make mistakes or invent information
  • Protect privacy – don’t share sensitive or personal data with open AI tools
  • Follow the law – ensure your use of AI complies with UK data protection and copyright laws
  • Support inclusion – AI can help overcome barriers, but final content should be reviewed and tailored to you

We understand that some applicants use AI tools to assist in drafting or editing their applications. That’s okay – but it’s often clear when AI has been overused.

Applications that rely too heavily on AI can feel generic and may not reflect your organisation’s voice, values or lived experience. This can affect your chances of success.

To give yourself the best chance, please avoid:

  • Submitting fully AI-generated or unedited responses
  • Using AI to create false data, quotes or stories
  • Relying entirely on AI to write your application
  • Sharing personal or sensitive data with insecure platforms
  • Using tools that breach copyright or misuse training data

Remember, we want to hear directly from you – your voice, your story, your impact.
