Step-free diversion via Southwark Bridge

For a step-free diversion around Millennium Bridge, please follow this suggested route. This guide is for those wishing to travel from the south bank to the north bank, but can work in both directions.

  • Follow the Bankside route, past Shakespeare’s Globe, then turn right into New Globe Walk
  • Follow New Globe Walk, cross Park Street, and continue along Emerson Street
  • Turn left into Sumner Street
  • Turn left onto Southwark Bridge Road, which leads to Southwark Bridge
  • Cross the river using Southwark Bridge, then turn left onto Upper Thames Street, and cross Upper Thames Street at the pedestrian crossing
  • Turn right into Castle Baynard Street, then right again onto Lambeth Hill
  • Turn left onto Queen Victoria Street
  • Turn left onto Peter’s Hill, which leads to the Millennium Bridge

Stepped diversion via Blackfriars Bridge

For a diversion around Millennium Bridge, with steps and via Blackfriars Bridge, please follow this suggested route. This guide is for those wishing to travel from the south bank to the north bank, but can work in both directions.

  • Follow the Thames Path, past Tate Modern and past the Flounder’s Arms
  • Follow the Thames Path below Blackfriars Railway Station
  • Take the steps on the left, which lead up to Blackfriars Bridge
  • Cross over Blackfriars Bridge then take the steps on the right, which lead down to the path along the river embankment. There is also a free lift here
  • Follow the path to Millennium Bridge, which is accessible by steps

Stepped diversion via Southwark Bridge

For a diversion around Millennium Bridge, with steps and via Southwark Bridge, please follow this suggested route. This guide is for those wishing to travel from the south bank to the north bank, but can work in both directions.

  • Follow the Bankside route, past Shakespeare’s Globe, to Southwark Bridge
  • Take the steps on the right up to Southwark Bridge and cross the river
  • Turn left at Upper Thames Street, then left again into High Timber Street
  • High Timber Street turns left into Broken Wharf, which leads to the riverside walk
  • Turn right and follow the riverside walk to Millennium Bridge
