Tower Bridge and its amazing Nose Bolts
Filmed in October 2023, this short video shows our contractors working through the night to replace Tower Bridge’s 2m-long nose bolts
Not many people know that Tower Bridge has four nose bolts slide which slide in and out of the bascules — the moving parts of the bridge — and lock the roadways in place when they are lowered.
This is the first time in decades they’ve been replaced and the work was done overnight to minimise disruption — carried out by South Yorkshire-based bridge specialists 3RS Engineering Ltd.
Tower Bridge is one of five Thames crossings owned and maintained by our 900-year-old charity – at no cost to the taxpayer. We spend around £10m every year on ensuring our five bridges are in tip-top condition for the tens of thousands of people who cross them every day.
As well as Tower Bridge, we look after London Bridge, Southwark Bridge, Millennium Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge.
We also support London’s communities by awarding over £30 million a year to charities across the capital. We literally and metaphorically bridge London, connect its communities and invest in its future.
